Sodium Chloride Injection, USP 0.9%, also known as Saline solution, is a sterile, non-pyrogenic, aqueous mixture of sodium chloride. It is indicated for infusion to restore fluid and electrolyte balance in individuals. This equal concentration preparation has a pH of between 6.5 and 7.5, and its osmolarity is approximately 290 milliosmoles per liter (mOsm/L).

The solution is hyperosmotic and exerts its effects by drawing fluids from the intracellular space into the vascular space. This elevates plasma osmolality, which in turn reduces edema formation.
